Formula One cars racing down Whitehall...? |
London lines up to overtake Silverstone!
LONDON, 19/10/04
With the future of the Silverstone British Grand Prix looking more precarious by the day, London F1 is aware of two feasibility studies supporting the case for a Formula 1 Grand Prix around the streets of the capitol.
|
One of these studies is believed to have been undertaken with the backing of Mr Harvey Goldsmith, who sparked the current interest in a London
F1 Grand Prix with the F1 demonstration in Regent Street [see previous article]. The results of this feasibility study are said to be very positive, although it is currently not publicly known who it is targeting and what aspects of an event were covered by the completed document.
London F1 has also been consulted about another feasibility study, that is still in the early stages of preparation. The scope of the work being proposed is extremely comprehensive and covers all the logistic of staging a Formula 1 Grand Prix in London. A major advantage of this study is that when completed, it will address issues that have to date been seen by some as reasons why the capitol cannot host such an event.
The structured manner in which a case for a London F1 Grand Prix is being pulled together is encouraging. Whether the aim is to host the British Grand Prix or the European Grand Prix (as advocated by London's Mayor), it is clear that a lot of work still has to be done. However, progress is being made while an agreement over the long term future for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone seems increasingly unlikely.
